MISSION STATEMENT

As the charitable giving arm of the ISPE Boston Area Chapter, the Foundation’s mission is to promote careers in pharma and biopharma manufacturing by providing financial assistance in the form of scholarships to students at New England institutions of higher learning studying in the allied fields leading to those careers.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The ISPE Boston Area Chapter Scholarship Foundation administers the Joel Goldenberg Memorial Scholarship Program for U.S. residents pursuing formal education in science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) fields enrolled in degreed programs at accredited educational institutions located in the New England and Albany/Schenectady areas. The Scholarship Program is intended for applicants pursuing careers in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing industries.

The Scholarship Program is supported through donations from the ISPE Boston Area Chapter and other organizations, as well as fundraising activities organized by the Foundation.

Annual awards of up to $20,000 are designed to support full-time students. Applications are accepted once annually, and awards are sent directly to the recipient’s educational institution. The award covers one full academic year and is disbursed in two equal increments.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must be ISPE members in good standing and U.S. residents enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university located in New England or the Albany/Schenectady area and pursuing Certification or an Associate, Bachelor, Master, or a Doctoral degree in any of the STEM disciplines. Three award categories are as follows:

Associate’s Degree or a one/two year Certificate program - Eligible for an award up to $5000 per semester/$10,000 per academic year:
  • Students pursuing an Associate Degree or enrolled in a multi-course program that awards a Certificate in a focused area of study.
Bachelor’s Degree - Eligible for an award up to $10,000 per semester/$20,000 per academic year:
  • Students in their freshman through senior year of undergraduate study (including 5-year programs that award Bachelor’s degrees)
Master’s or PhD - Eligible for an award up to $5000 per semester/$10,000 per academic year:
  • Students entering or continuing post graduate coursework for a Masters or PhD degree.

If there are no suitable applicants in a category the Scholarship Award Committee may, at its discretion, redirect the funds to another category or simply make no award.

LIMITATIONS

The award may only be used to cover costs that are directly billed to the student by the academic institution. Applicants must document the costs to be covered by the award on the application and provide proof of those costs before disbursement. The award cannot exceed the balance due to the academic institution during the academic year covered.

The award covers a single academic year. The applicant must reapply for subsequent years and there is no guarantee of future awards. When applying for additional scholarships, candidates must submit official documentation demonstrating receipt of grades of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale).

APPLICATION DUE DATES

Applications are due by Monday, June 3, 2024. Since applications require a written reference to be submitted, applicants are encouraged to begin the process well in advance of the due date.

AWARD CRITERIA

Applications will be considered by the Scholarship Foundation, which will base its award decisions on the following:

  • Completed application
  • Essay(s) submitted
  • One written reference provided online, plus two additional references with contact information only
  • Involvement with ISPE, if any
  • Volunteer activities
  • Academic and other significant achievements
  • Number of applications submitted & availability of scholarship funds.

As described above under Program Description, the program is intended for applicants pursuing careers in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing industries. Applicants pursuing other disciplines with a strong commitment to a career in the pharma/biotech industry may be considered at the discretion of the Foundation.

Please note: As a condition of accepting a scholarship award from the Foundation, winners agree to permit use of the information provided in their application in ISPE Boston Area Chapter and Scholarship Foundation publications, both online and in print.

NOTIFICATION

Results will be communicated to all applicants by Thursday, August 1, 2024.

DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS

Funds will be sent directly to the academic institution attended by scholarship winners in the form of a check. Disbursements will be sent in August and January. In order to receive the second disbursement, the recipient will need to supply the scholarship award committee with a signed letter confirming that there has been no changes in their career plans or field of study, as well as supporting documentation of no career change or change in financial need. Supporting documentation can be a tuition bill and course selection for the spring semester.
